| The newest addition to hair removal methods, laser hair removal provides safe, long-term hair reduction. We offer treatment with the 810 nm diode laser or the 1064 nm Coolglide laser. The diode laser, with a 810 nm wavelength, is used at our office for hair removal from fair as well as darker complexions. The Coolglide laser is not only effective for all skin types it is safer for darker asian and african complexions. The minor discomfort from the treatment can be effectively controlled with an anesthetic cream before the treatment, if needed. Laser hair removal is most effective for brown or black hair. White or blonde hair lack the pigment necessary for absorption of the laser energy and are, therefore, not affected. Red hair has very little pigment and does not respond as well as darker hair. Multiple treatments are necessary for effective hair reduction. Incremental improvement occurs with successive treatments. Approximately 60%-70% reduction occurs after four treatments for darker hair. Further treatments provide a further decrease in hair growth. The risk of pigmentation following laser treatment is minimized by the use of the longer 810 mm wavelength, and by sun-protection before and after the treatment. For darker skin types risk of ultered pigmentation is reduced further with the Coolglide laser. All areas of the face, neck, arms, legs, underarms, bikini area, back and chest can be treated by the laser. A medical consultation before the laser treatment is important to rule out medical problems which can cause excessive hair growth. If such an abnormality is detected, treatment of the underlying problem is not only important to the patient's health; it also corrects the excessive hair growth. |
