This procedure has a well-established place in the treatment of wrinkles and acne scars. Laser resurfacing can be performed for specific areas; e.g. arround the eyes or mouth, or the whole face, depending on the patient's needs. Dr. Diwan performs laser resurfacing with the sophisticated silktouch or ultrapulse carbon dioxide lasers. The laser precisely removes the surface of wrinkles or scarred skin which is replaced by new, smoother skin.

Local anesthesia is needed for laser resurfacing of limited areas and the procedure is safely performed in the office. Laser resurfacing of more extensive areas or the whole face is usually best performed with general anesthesia at an outpatient surgery center. A gentler resurfacing procedure is performed in areas with finer wrinkles or superficial scars, and a deeper procedure for areas with deeper wrinkles and scars.

Treated ares are either bandaged or cared for by frequent cleaning by the patient. The healing process is painless and can take up to two weeks. The results of laser resurfacing are gratifying and patients often have dramatic improvement in wrinkles along with tightening of the skin, and acne scars also improve significantly. Any residual scars may be improved further by collagen injections or a second resurfacing prodecure one year later.

Camouflage make-up is essential to conceal the pinkness of the new skin after healing is complete, until it fades over the next few months. Meticulous skin protection is vital to ensure even coloration of the new skin and to delay the appearance of new wrinkles.

Laser resurfacing is often followed by BOTOX ® injections to prevent the re-apprearance of facial expression lines.
